Prof Mike Grocott appointed as NIHR CRN Specialty Lead
We are delighted to announce that Professor Mike Grocott, Director of the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre (HSRC), has been appointed to serve as the NIHR CRN Specialty National Lead for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management. This appointment will commence from 1 July 2015 for three years in the first instance.
In addition to leading the HSRC, Mike is currently Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Southampton and Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He leads the Critical Care/ Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine Research Unit within University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and the Critical Care Research Area of the Southampton NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit. While his research interests span the many facets of health services research, he is also Director of the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Oxygen Research Consortium and leads the Fit-4-Surgery research consortium. Mike also leads the Centre for Human Integrative Physiology at the University of Southampton and is joint Editor-in-Chief of the BIoMedCentral journal Extreme Physiology and Medicine.
Mike will follow in the footsteps of Professor Martin Leuwer. Highly regarded as one of the leading lights of British anaesthesia, Martin took over the NIHR UK Clinical Research Network Anaesthesia Specialty Group at a critical time when the future of its independent identity was at stake. Through wise leadership and careful negotiation he made a clear and compelling case nationally that we should continue as an independent defined specialty within the UKCRN structure. He went on to redefine and rebrand us into the Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain specialty group.
The group has thrived under Martin's leadership and he has played a key role in inspiring colleagues to undertake research and conduct studies that consistently perform to time and target. He has successfully grown the number of commercial studies on the portfolio and raised the specialty's profile within industry as a result. Notable achievements include the engagement of several UK centres into the Canadian led VISION study, the European Surgical Outcomes Study (EuSOS) and the hugely successful SNAP-1 study, our largest national recruitment into a UKCRN portfolio study to date.
The specialty has benefited immensely from Martin's dedication and his ability to enthuse and motivate which has brought such rich rewards. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his commitment and for laying such strong foundations on which the specialty can build over the coming years.
