NIHR HTA: Important Update for Applicants

The HTA Programme produces independent research information about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests for those who plan, provide or receive care in the NHS.

1: Important information for all HTA researchers and applicants

The HTA Programme is changing its schedule to reduce the time to assess and commission research by up to six months. The new system will enable more research to start sooner for the benefit of patients and the NHS.

Researchers should check the HTA Programme website for detailed information about individual funding opportunities, as the closing dates may vary within the same call.

2: Research proposals are invited for the following calls:

(Clinical Evaluation and Trials Work-stream)

Important note for all researcher-led applicants: The guidance notes on how to complete the new application form have been revised since the current call was launched. Applicants are advised to download the latest version which is available on the HTA website.

The HTA's researcher-led calls are open all year round, with three application cut-off dates. The next closing date for applications is 1pm on Monday 3 September 2012. To apply please click here.

The programme commissions research using a range of study designs, not just RCTs. There is no funding cap for studies but all proposals need to offer good value for money to the NHS and all costs are carefully reviewed by the programme.

The current portfolio of research includes:

  • evidence synthesis
  • modelling studies
  • randomised controlled trials (un-blinded, single/double/triple-blinded)
  • non-randomised trials
  • stand-alone pilot and feasibility studies (where there is evidence they will lead to a full trial)
  • cohort studies (retrospective or prospective)
  • longitudinal studies
  • diagnostic test accuracy studies
  • adaptive designs

Proposals deemed within remit for the current call will be assessed for their importance to the NHS in November 2012 and January 2013. Applicants will be advised as to whether they have been short-listed by the end of March 2013.

For any further enquiries, please contact the HTA Clinical Evaluation and Trials team: 023 8059 6974 or via the website.
