The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Respiratory Infection Group forms part of the new £23m Centre for Tropical Infectious Diseases (CTID) at the LSTM and in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust. The Trust is a city-centre hospital located adjacent to the University of Liverpool with approximately 900 beds, serving a population of 450,000. A new hospital is due to be rebuilt on the same site with a completion date of 2017. The hospital contains a purpose built Clinical Research Unit with research beds and an active team with close relations with the Local Comprehensive Research Network (LCRN).
LSTM was recently awarded two major grants for the Pneumococcal Carriage Programme: one from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) for £1.6m, the other a Programme grant from the Medical Research Council (MRC) for £2.2m. The Pneumococcal Carriage Programme involves a dynamic multidisciplinary team based within LSTM and Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust and over 20 national and international commercial and academic partners.
We are now seeking to recruit two experienced Clinical Research Fellows to interact with ongoing projects to include those within the Clinical Research Facility in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust. These posts offer a unique training opportunity and the intention is that the appointees will complete a degree.
Key Duties and responsibilities include:
- Screening and recruitment of research volunteers, including: lung function testing, gaining informed consent, sampling, performing research bronchoscopy and BAL including post-procedure follow-up
- Teaching, planning and write-up of an MD or PhD thesis with peer-reviewed publications
- Provide clinical/laboratory link between collaborating sites in Liverpool and elsewhere
- Undertake ward duties including: history taking, examination and record keeping
- Carry out weekly out-patient clinics for general respiratory, infection and research volunteers
Essential candidate criteria:
- Specialty NTN, Anaesthetic or Intensive Care Trainees may apply
- Ability to evidence progression in academic research
- Can work in a multidisciplinary team demonstrating a collaborative approach
- Strong attention to detail
- Self-motivated and able to use own initiative to make decisions and identify solutions
- Excellent communication, relationship and organisational skills
