RCP report advocates for more NHS research activity

NIAA Founding Partner the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) has today endorsed the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) document advocating more research activity in the NHS.

Benefiting from the 'research effect' presents a case for trusts supporting clinicians to become more research active and innovative, as part of the RCP's wider Delivering Research for all project.

The report sets out how NHS trusts can better support clinicians to become research active, and the huge benefits this will deliver for patients, trusts and staff themselves, and includes a number of outcomes and recommendations linked to the research effect:

For patients

  • Improved survival rates
  • Improved sense of value through taking part in research
  • Better overall care, as represented in higher Care Quality Commission (CQC) ratings

For trusts

  • Improved recruitment and retention of staff
  • Meeting CQC inspections
  • Cost-effective innovations and savings, and translation of research into practice

For staff

  • Reduced level of burnout/emotional exhaustion
  • Better morale and job satisfaction
  • Building transferable skills and developing new networks
