FREE places to attend 2018 SARS Annual Meeting
We are pleased to offer free places for 3 anaesthetists to attend the Society of Academic & Research Surgery (SARS) Annual Meeting, at the University of Nottingham on 10th & 11th January 2018.
Following the success of the perioperative care day at the 2017 meeting, this will be repeated at the Nottingham event on 11th January 2018 where delegates can hear about the latest developments in general surgery, anaesthetics and ITU. There are also a number of oral presentations and prize award sessions and Professor Rupert Pearse will be delivering the John Farndon Lecture. More information is available here.
Anaesthetists at all grades are eligible to take part in this opportunity to help promote cross-specialty engagement with surgical colleagues.

POMCTN Vacancies
The UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (POMCTN) is recruiting for up to two positions on its Board: Deputy Director and Board Member.
Both positions are advertised under open recruitment. Candidates are able to apply for either or both of the two positions, but must be clear in their submissions which role(s) they are applying for.

James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership - Broken Bones in Older People
The James Lind Alliance is running a new Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) to find out the top ten questions that patients, their relatives and healthcare professionals want answered by research into fractures of the lower limb and pelvis in older patients.
Anaesthetists should be familiar with the process involved, following on from the successful James Lind Alliance/National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) PSP on anaesthesia and perioperative care.
QuARCs may have participated in the first broken bones in older people survey. You can now take part in the second survey, which asks you to prioritise the responses received in the first survey. This should take you about 5-10 minutes.
The survey can be found online here and will be open until Friday 22nd December 2017.
Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship Round 10
Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowships give early-career biomedical researchers the chance to undertake short-term visits to further their research experience and learn new techniques. This scheme aims to build research links and developing ongoing scientific collaborations between the UK and the Middle East.
They are open to medical and non-medical graduates who can show a commitment to a career in research. Applicants will typically, but not necessarily, be at post-doctoral level.
The Fellowship will cover airfare and a subsistence allowance for a period of up to four weeks. Funding is provided to an upper limit of £3,500 per fellowship (up to £750 of which can be used to cover the cost of airfares).
This year a small number of three month fellowships are being offered. The upper limit for these is £9,000 (up to £750 of which can be used to cover the cost of airfares).

VASGBI Trainee Development Grants
NIAA funding partner The Vascular Anaesthesia Society of Great Britain and Ireland is inviting applications for Trainee Research and Audit Development grants of up to £5,000, for the purpose of supporting research and audit projects in the field of vascular anaesthesia undertaken by anaesthetic trainees.
Awards are open to all anaesthetic trainees in United Kingdom and Ireland not holding a substantive or locum consultant post. The trainee must be working in or affiliated with a department providing vascular anaesthetic services.
Applications will be peer-reviewed by the VASGBI research and audit committee and may be subject to external peer review. Award recipients will be expected to present their findings at a meeting of the Society.

L'Oreal-UNESCO for Women In Science Awards
The L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science UK & Ireland Fellowship Awards Programme has for 20 years recognised the achievements and contributions of exceptional females across the globe, by awarding promising scientists with Fellowships to help further their research.
The 2018 programme will open for applications on Monday 4th December 2017, and will award five outstanding female early-career scientist researchers in the fields of the life and physical sciences a bursary of £15,000 each.

2018 BMA Foundation for Medical Research Grants
The BMA Foundation for Medical Research provides approximately £600,000 of research funding annually, this year across 11 different grants.
Details of the 2018 grants have now been confirmed on the BMA Foundation website here, and applications are invited from medical practitioners and/or research scientists for research in progress or prospective research.

BJA/NIAA Research Methodology Workshop

A joint workshop with the British Journal of Anaesthesia and the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia to introduce participants to the way in which good research should be conducted and presented.
The workshop will be useful for anaesthetists of any grade who are already involved in research or those who are about to embark on a research project. Post FRCA Specialist Registrars and Lecturers will find this meeting to be particularly appropriate to their needs since knowledge of research methodology is one of the non-clinical topics which form an important part of Post FRCA training.
Even if actual research is not undertaken it is considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports in the literature.
Teaching sessions will address: developing a research idea; study design; project management; analysis; presentation and interpretation of data; dissemination of results.
Group sessions will allow participants to: provide criticism of a published research paper; design a clinical trial; detect common pitfalls in analysis and interpretation of data.

We are pleased to announce that the third National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) Annual Scientific Meeting will take place at the RCoA on Monday 21st May 2018.
This meeting will include updates on NIAA-related research activities including the Health Services Research Centre (HSRC), the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (UK POM CTN), and as 2018 is the 10 year anniversary of the NIAA there will be a look back at its achievements and a focus on plans for the future.

We will also once again be running the NIAA Research Award, which is open to all current and active researchers of anaesthesia, critical care, perioperative medicine and pain across the UK.
It provides a great opportunity for new investigators to get their work recognised, short listed applicants will be invited to present at the NIAA meeting and the overall winner will be announced on the day.
