Joint workshop with the NIHR Health Technology Assessment, HTA, Programme
As part of the annual UK HSRC Perioperative Care Research Forum meeting, to be held on Thursday 22 May 2014, we are planning a joint workshop with representatives of the NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme.
The purpose of this workshop is to identify important research questions in Perioperative Care that are within the remit of the HTA. Suitable questions will be developed by the Programme with a view to advertising them in a call for research proposals.
This is a key opportunity for us to shape the research agenda and has the potential to bring considerable additional research funding to support future clinical practice within perioperative care.
In preparing for the workshop we are collating a list of potential research questions through engagement with stakeholders and other avenues. These will be discussed further during the workshop and by the end we would like to identify a shortlist of well developed questions which we collectively agree are a clear priority and which can be put forward to the HTA Programme.
The HSRC would like to invite you to forward a research question for HTA consideration which may be discussed on the day. At this stage all we need are the 4 PICO elements (Patient group, Intervention, Comparator and Outcomes) and a brief statement on why the proposed research is important.

NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme
The HTA Programme funds independent research on the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests to meet the needs of healthcare professionals, NHS managers and those who receive care in the NHS. The remit of the programme is wide and encompasses:
- health care interventions to promote health and prevent disease
- diagnostic tests or questionnaires
- drug treatments and devices
- interventions such as surgical techniques, physical and talking therapies and rehabilitation
The programme identifies research priorities by consulting widely with stakeholders within the NHS, the wider public health community and NIHR, with organisations representing health/public health professionals, patients and carers and with policy-makers. The programme then advertises calls for research proposals to address these priorities.

- How effective is haemodynamic goal-directed therapy in reducing the incidence of postoperative infections in particular the rate of surgical site infections, pneumonia and urinary tract infections?

Joint NIAA & RCS Meeting
Monday 28 April 2014
This joint meeting with the Royal College of Surgeons will explore new collaborative research opportunities for surgeons and anaesthetists focusing on key developments in perioperative care and enhanced recovery. Sessions will include a Funders Marketplace, Exemplar Initiatives and Dragons Den.

Sprint National Anaesthesia Projects
SNAP-1 is an exciting new initiative taking place in May 2014 and will involve a two day evaluation of patient reported outcome after anaesthesia; specifically, patient satisfaction and patient reported awareness.
The project will provide a 'snapshot' evaluation of activity and patient centred outcomes that will be important to both patients and anaesthetists.
