The National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's Health Services Research Centre (NIAA HSRC), in conjunction with the UCLH Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOURCe), the London Clinic and Princess Grace Hospital, seeks to appoint three clinical research fellows to work on national health services research projects. The posts will commence in August 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter (latest start date: Wednesday 3 February 2016). Please find details for each of the posts below.
Health Services Research Fellow to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA)
The aim of the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) is to enable the improvement of the quality of care for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy through the provision of high quality comparative data from all providers of emergency laparotomy. The NIAA HSRC is delivering NELA on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. NELA is a collaboration between anaesthetic, surgical and other key stakeholders.
The successful candidate's responsibilities will include data analysis, report and manuscript writing, and presentations at local/regional/national meetings. Candidates will be expected to attend NELA Project Team meetings as well as additional meetings related to data analysis, quality improvement, report preparation and other meetings as required.

Health Services Research Fellow to the second Sprint National Anaesthesia Project (SNAP-2)
We are seeking to appoint a candidate who is able to commit to two years and undertake an MD(Res) based on this study. SNAP-2 will be an observational cohort study evaluating the EPIdemiology of Critical Care provision after Surgery (EPICCS). The lay abstract for this grant can be found here.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall project management of this study, with administrative support from staff at the NIAA HSRC. They will be supervised by Dr Ramani Moonesinghe and lead project delivery, statistical analysis and manuscript preparation.

Health Services Research Fellow to the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP)
We are seeking to appoint a clinical research fellow for one year in the first instance, with the opportunity to extend to MD(Res) (two years) or PhD (three years) based on appraisal and progress. The Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme is a new initiative being led by the RCoA, NIAA HSRC, UCL/UCLH Surgical Outcomes Research Centre and supported by the Health Foundation. The aim is to deliver a pilot national clinical quality improvement programme, prospectively measuring complications and patient reported outcome after major surgery, and with quality improvement methodology implemented from the outset. The fellow will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of academic work including systematic review, quantitative and qualitative analysis and/or train in ethnographic methods.

General Information
Each of these posts is linked to a clinical commitment to the critical care unit at either the London Clinic or the Princess Grace Hospital, both situated in central London. The London Clinic has a busy 11-bedded unit which admits Level 2/3 patients from a wide range of specialties, including haematology, oncology, surgery and medicine, providing all modalities of organ support and fully supported by consultants in Intensive Care Medicine. The Princess Grace Hospital is part of the HCA International group of hospitals offering high-quality care to a broad range of medical and surgical patients. This nine-bedded facility provides consultant delivered care in a state-of-the-art unit where a dedicated team of Critical Care professionals are on hand to manage both routine and complex clinical conditions.
The successful candidates for all three posts will be expected to undertake a maximum of six shifts per month (the clinical commitment may be reduced during the course of the fellowships but will definitely not be greater than this). At least six months of the two-year SNAP-2 post will be full-time research, supported by an AAGBI Project Grant. All clinical duties will be under consultant supervision.
Every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate the needs of non-London based applicants; however, clinical duties and meetings based at the RCoA will require successful candidates to travel to London for at least one or two days per week on average. The RCoA will reimburse travel expenses for research-related meetings for trainees who live outside London.
Person Specification
Applicants should have a minimum of six months clinical Intensive Care experience and be independently competent at airway management. They should have excellent organisational skills and an interest in academic anaesthesia. These are non-training posts, but successful candidates who are in training schemes will be encouraged to prospectively apply to their local training programme for Out of Programme Research post status.
