Project Team Members

Dr Ramani Moonesinghe
MD(Res) MRCP FRCA FFICM

Chief Investigator

Ramani is a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and Director, UCL/UCLH Surgical Outcomes Research Centre. She is a Board Member of the UK's National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA), where she is Academic training advisor and is Deputy Director of the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre. She is Academic Training Program Director for the London Academy of Anaesthesia. She was a Council Member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists between 2008 and 2012.

Ramani's research interest is Health Services Research and Improvement Science in perioperative medicine, in particular, risk stratification and outcome measurement with a view to improving the quality of care for patients undergoing major surgery. She has recently begun a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship in Improvement Science with the Health Foundation and is leading the development of a Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme to measure morbidity and patient reported outcome after major non-cardiac surgery.

Dr Steve Harris
PhD FRCA FFICM

Co-Investigator

Steve is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care at University College Hospital London. For half the week, he works on the Critical Care Unit and in theatre, and for the other half, he works in a research group that tackles clinical research questions using electronic health records.

For his PhD he designed and conducted a two-arm prospective observational cohort study in 96 acute NHS hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, in order to examine the survival of deteriorating ward patients, and estimate the effect of early delivery of critical care on outcomes.

Dr Danny Wong
MBBS MRCP FRCA

Co-Investigator

Danny is an Anaesthetic Specialty Registrar from London, currently taking time Out-of-Programme for Research (OOPR) with the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia Health Services Research Centre (NIAA HSRC). He is the trainee lead for SNAP-2: EpiCCS and is registered for an MPhil/PhD at the Department of Applied Health Research (DAHR), UCL.

Professor Mike Grocott
MD FRCP FRCA FFICM

Steering Group Chair

Professor Grocott is the Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Southampton (UoS) where he leads the Centre for Human Integrative Physiology. He is also a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) where he leads the critical care research area of the UHS-UoS NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit. He is an elected board member of the UK Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. He is also national lead for the NIHR CRN Specialty Group for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain.

Mike leads the Xtreme-Everest Oxygen Research Consortium and the Fit-4-Surgery Group. He was past Director of the NIAA Health Services Research Centre and chairs the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. He previously led UCLH-UCL Surgical Outcomes research Centre (SOuRCe) and the UCL Centre for Altitude Space and Extreme Environment Medicine (CASE Medicine). Mike is Joint Editor-in-Chief of the BioMedCentral journal Extreme Physiology and Medicine (www.extremephysiolmed.com). His research interests include human responses to hypoxia, measuring and improving outcome following surgery, acute lung injury, and fluid therapy.

Professor Robert Sneyd

Professor Sneyd is a Consultant Anaesthetist in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. He is Dean of the Medical and Dental Schools in Plymouth and have served as Vice-President of both Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland and Royal College of Anaesthetists. He is a current Council Member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He is a scientific reviewer for a number of journals including the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Anaesthesiology, Anaesthesia, Anaesthesia & Analgesia, and the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.

Dr Stephen Brett

Professor Brett is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital - part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. As well as his clinical responsibilities he leads the Centre for Perioperative Medicine and Critical Care Research, and he is Professor of Critical Care at Imperial College London. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal Critical Care and is currently President of the Intensive Care Society.

Dr Anna Batchelor

Dr Batchelor is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist in Newcastle spending 50% of her time in each. Her anaesthetic interests include patients for endocrine, gastro-intestinal and burns and reconstructive surgery. She is a Past President of the Intensive Care Society and current Dean of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. She led the production of the new curriculum for ICM and the ICM component of the anaesthesia curriculum. She also led the production of the DH framework for Advanced Critical Care Practitioners and the FICM curriculum for ACCPs.

Ms Catherine Plowright

Catherine Plowright trained in Glasgow and qualified in 1985. She has worked within a variety of critical care settings since 1987 and is currently the Consultant Nurse in Critical Care working at Medway NHS Foundation Trust. She is also an Honorary Lecturer at her local University, teaching on a variety of undergraduate and post graduate programmes, and a Visiting Lecturer at another university.
Catherine has presented at many conferences (nationally and internationally), has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals and she has been a member of the Scientific Committee for this conference since 2013. Catherine is a peer reviewer for numerous journals, including 'Nursing in Critical Care' and 'Intensive and Critical Care Nursing', and she is on the Editorial Board for both of these journals. Catherine has been on the BACCN National Board since as a Professional Advisor form 2009 to 2016.

Mr Suman Shrestha

Suman Shrestha is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in critical care at Frimley Park Hospital (Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust) in Surrey. Suman has been working in critical care since 2001. Suman is a senior nurse within the trust and also has corporate wide responsibilities on matters that are of relevance to the care of the critically ill patients such as improving sepsis care and tracheostomy. External to the trust, Suman is a committee member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Critical Care Forum and represents RCN on various national forums and projects at the NHS England, NCEPOD, Health Education England, NICE and UK Critical Care Nursing Alliance. Suman is also a visiting lecturer at Brighton University.'

Mr Richard Shawyer

Richard became a patient in 1995. His treatment has involved experimental treatments, many surgical operations including upwards of 10 major surgical procedures. Through his direct care he created a business in healthcare which he subsequently sold to a US firm in 2015. Richard has sat on numerous research studies, has worked with the European Medicine Agency, multiple pharma companies as well as the Joint Aviation Authority. Richard's main aim is to improve the patient journey and patient safety. Richard believes that patient journey includes making informed decisions. In addition Richard is a trustee of a patient charity.
