Research Interest

My PhD was at the Respiratory Muscle Laboratory at the Royal Brompton Hospital, where I investigated muscle weakness, endurance and fatigue in health and disease. This especially covered MND, the effect of steroids and weakness associated with critical illness. To this end I developed non-volitional tests of inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength and have been involved in novel techniques for lung imaging, especially functional techniques.
I have worked on EPSRC funded projects using intelligent systems to optimise and advise on patient care, especially involving ventilation. I have experience in incorporating health economics into studies of this kind and was formerly UK lead for the Cost-Block Program.
I am a member of the Protective Ventilation (PROVE) Network, the ESA Respiratory Committee and am UK lead for 4 international (Portfolio) studies, including Provhilo, Provent, Probese and Balanced. I am also academic lead for the Sheffield EPAQ-PO preoperative assessment project.
I was Deputy Coordinator of the 9 Nation European FP7 study PREDICT. This project examined the exclusion of older people from clinical trials (a vital topic with our ageing population with multiple comorbidities and polypharmacy). This work produced The European Charter on Inclusion of Older People in Clinical Trials, which I presented at the European Parliament in Brussels in 2011.
I am particularly interested in respiratory complications after surgery and critical illness, especially in older or frail people.

Research Expertise

-Respiratory physiology and disease including the respiratory muscles and in relation to anaesthesia and critical care.
-Care of the older and more frail patient, including delirium and the effect of the critical care environment
-Intelligent systems to aid assessment and patient management especially of the respiratory system.
-Effects of ventilation and ventilatory modes.
I have held 3 EPSRC grants, an FP 7 EU grant, an NIHR funded grant and a number of smaller grants.

Research Areas

Intelligent systems
Functional Lung Imaging.
Respiratory failure and muscle weakness
Ventilatory techniques and respiratory support on the ICU, in theatre and during the perioperative period.
Preoperative assessment and outcome measurement especially in chest disease and the older population
